It was 0:vt07, and that was the only change I made. Will try your other
suggestion.

Try looking for config files in /usr/X11r6/kdm

Try making the change to the Xservers file in that directory as you did to 
the Xservers file in the xdm directory.  I'm still confused BTW as to 
whether or not that you made ONE and ONLY ONE change to get the xdm-login 
working, which was to add the "vt7" to the end of that line?
