Hmmm.  The tilde suffix is a backup file from some text editor.  Any
idea where it came from?  But wait a minute, I'm not sure I understand
the rest of that paragraph.  You fixed the Xservers file, and now xdm
puts up the login screen the way it should, and you can log in and your
window manager starts and all is good, right?  Then when you log out,
xdm puts the login screen back up?

That's what it's supposed to do.  Tell us again what the problem is?
