Hi Tom

Thanks for trying to help

I tried again last night, putting the cards in to a newer machine to see what
happened, and I got the same result.

The problem I seem to have is that the machine(s) lock up. The OS is Mandrake
8.1, which only ever offers me the choice of configuring one of the two graphics
cards, and then promptly locks up when trying to test X (hard reset required).

I also tried building my own 4.2 version of X which once again would work on one
screen, but the best it managed was a stripy pattern on the other.

I guess I need to know the following...

(i) can X 4.1 support 2 cards (S3 Trio 3D/2X)
(ii) what resources does a graphics card require on a machine. I am concerned
about the warnig I get from the bios saying that the two cards are trying to use
the same resource in terms of the "low <640K dos memory". ie. the bios puts in a
resource string of memory excludes, or the type you used to have to put into
config.sys for the grey beards out there :-).

(iii) the cards do appear to have different pci:xx:xx:xx numbers in the bios,
and I have tried using the BusID as you mention.

(iv) I have tried to start x with the xirama option, does there have to be a
corresponding entry in the XConfig-4 file?

I really am stuck with this, because the machine continually locks up I don't
know how to get diagnostics.

Thanks anyone.

Rob
