again a partial answer:
1. 4.x.x can and do support 2 cards
4. xinerama has probably nothing to do with your problem it only allows you to use two 
screens as
one large screen.
If I were you I would really use google on the list because there were a couple of 
config files
posted. 
I am not at ease with Mandrake (I have RH) however make sure you are hacking at the 
right
XF86Config (resp. XF86Config-4)
I would also during the configuration not try to test, I have had problems with that 
test, not
running it allowed the configuration program to finish gracefully and the 
configuration file I got
worked perfectly (you may obviously not have that luck, but one can try)
I am afraid but I don't remember whether one had to do something in the BIOS
