Look, I know your trying to help, but I _know_ that, forgive me if I start to sound a little rude, but I asked a specific question about disabling the probing of mode lines, not how to set up my laptop. I have been subscribed to the Linux-Dell-Laptop mailing list for quite some time, long before I got this newest Dell Inspiron 4100. I have read EVERY Dell page linked from http://www.linux-laptop.net I have posted to Dell's customer support forum, and got no help. I have posted to Nvidia's customer support forum, and got no answers. I've written XF86Config files by hand since 1997. That is NOT news to me. I know how to set the file up, that's not the problem. The problem is that XFree86 thinks it's smarter than me, and it adds it's own frigging configuration, stuff that's totally wrong. I really want to know how to _DISABLE_ XFree86's probing of modes, and have it only use what I tell it to use. I believe this is what I need to try because XFree86 DOES try probing them, it DOES think the following modes are valid (**) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes for Display Device 0: (**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1400x1050": 122.0 MHz, 64.9 kHz, 60.0 Hz (**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1280x1024": 108.0 MHz, 64.0 kHz, 60.0 Hz (**) NVIDIA(0): Default mode "1280x960": 108.0 MHz, 60.0 kHz, 60.0 Hz And, quite clearly they are NOT valid, but still I can look at my log files to see that it IS trying to run the display at 1400x1050 and 1280x1024. I did NOT specify them as ModeLines, the only Modelines I specified are at 1024x768. However, it seems to probe for modes on it's own anyway, and comes back with stuff that isn't correct. When it thinks the screen can do those modes, and you try to do a Ctrl-Alt-+ or Cont-Alt-- I can clearly see that everything is completely screwed up, and it's running ABOVE 1024x768. When it toggles it's way all the way back down to 640x480, the screen is perfectly clear, and I scroll around in a big "virtual" screen, as would be expected. HOWEVER, even when it's in 640x480, the mouse-pointer goes off the bottom of the screen and/or to the left of the screen. X still thinks, even in 640x480, that there is more screen out there than there actually is. But there isn't screen there, so the pointer just goes right off the edge of the screen. It's incredibly annoying.
