Hi Frederic,
strictly speaking GNOME and KDE are "Desktops" not merely "Window 
Managers" which run under desktops.  I've also replied in another response 
to your question advising you to edit your $HOME/.Xclient-defaults if you 
are using RedHat.  If you are not, then I think that the system-wide place 
to edit should be /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/Xclients
        If you edit that then everyone on the system will be forced to use 
that.  There is also the utility "switchdesk" which is available on RH 
systems from the "Start"/footprint.
