[43] George Graham on United
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, May 7, 2002 by bar-knee:
"I think everybody within the game knows that for Sir Alex this is a great challenge.
He will be up for it. I think he will have the cheque book out in the summer and he
will be buying one or two players. I think they need one or two in certain positions
then they will be back up there. It's good for the game that Arsenal are now
challenging United at the very highest level. You have three units within the team -
defence, midfield and your forwards. You hope that they will all function properly at
the same time and on a regular basis. Arsenal were a little bit iffy defensively at
the beginning of the season but as it has progressed the defence has got better and
better. Earlier in the season they did not play particularly well but they still kept
a clean sheet and scored goals to win games. United didn't have that solidity
defensively. So when they went through a bad period prior to Christmas they were
getting beaten playing poorly. But then they went on a wonderful run that !
took them right up there. It could now go to the last game of the season - and that's
with United having a really bad season."

>From the Mirror, who say that 'Fergie has lost the plot' - when we'd hint it has more
>to do with putting up with a load of sh*te on a Bank Holiday Monday after still
>hurting from last week.

QUESTION: You said you felt there had been a certain arrogance in the way Arsenal were
saying they'd already won the title?

FERGIE: "I'm not getting involved in that because you just want a f****** story as
usual. I'm not getting involved in that. Your f****** stuff is a disgrace to
journalism and you are. The stuff you f****** come out with.

Q: What?

FERGIE: "You're always f****** going on about this club. Always.

Q: It's our job to cover this club.

Fergie: "Och, you're a joke."

Q: Name one story...?

FERGIE: "Listen, you've been going on about f****** Veron. You tell me what's wrong
with Veron?

Q: We're not the only ones.

FERGIE: "You are, you're the worst.

Q: Veron just hasn't played very well.

FERGIE: "Well, I think he has. What's this thing about fights and all the rest of this
s***?"

Q: So we can't talk about individual players? Will Veron play on Wednesday?

FERGIE: "I've no picked the team yet."

Q: What about accusations he had a bust-up, is not going to play again and is going
home?

FERGIE: "That's been answered."

Q: The fans would be interested in what you had to say.

FERGIE: "It's absolute nonsense, you know it's nonsense. Absolute lies. I can't
believe you write these things. Anyway, that's finished. On you go."

Q: You wouldn't talk generally about Veron...

FERGIE: "On you go. I'm no f****** talking to you. He's a f****** great player. Yous
are f****** idiots."

John O'Shea (not in Ireland squad) and Michael Stewart

“I think that’s there for them if they keep working hard every day. John O’Shea has
done that this season, but Michael’s been on the fringe of things, too. Michael and
John wouldn’t be here in the first place if they didn’t have a chance of playing for
United. From the start of next season the manager will again look at everybody and I’m
sure he’ll be looking closely at John and Michael. The new contracts were all they
needed to give them confidence and show them that so many people hold them in high
regard. Michael can take a lot from things this season. He’s now played for Scotland
and has done ever so well for them and he’s got a great chance of going on tour with
them when they go to the Far East. Not only will that help him improve football-wise,
but experience and reputation wise too he will be a better player for it."

"We will keep our powder dry on our plans but inaccurate stories of the nature we read

"We are not going to stand for it anymore. These stories are just wildly inaccurate.
You have to believe there are concerted efforts by people outside of United to
unsettle Juan Veron and it is unsettling. Nobody needs that. Seba is a world class
player. He has demonstrated that to us on occasions. I have no doubt he will be one of
the main players coming out of the World Cup. He is absolute quality. What is
undermining is the continual focus on him wanting to go and not being happy. Nothing
could be further from the truth. We want to squash that once and for all. It is not
doing any good to anyone. Seba now understands the immense media attention when you
come to Manchester United more so than any other country and any other club really.

He’s had reassurances from everybody that this is not a Manchester United issue this
is starting somewhere else. We have, and will continue, to reassure him about his
future here from a club point of view. We are going to look at other ways now of
addressing this problem because it has gone on for too long and is undermining
everybody, not just Seba, but the team as a whole. That is not acceptable."

[35] Fergie speaking to MUTV
---------------------------------
Posted Tuesday, May 7, 2002 by bar-knee:
from the official site

Ready for Arsenal
"Leverkusen was disappointing. You have to depend on the players' character to get
over it. We've got a massive game on Wednesday - we want to win the match and take it
to the final game of the season which would be fantastic drama for the League. We'll
have done our best then.

"Last Tuesday was the biggest game of the season. In the situation we're in, we hoped
that Arsenal would have dropped just two points, drawn one game, to allow us the
opportunity to win the League. If that had happened this would be the bigest game of
the season. But they have the cushion and we've done our best. Our run-in has been
good, but Arsenal have won all their games, so credit to them. They're in top form and
you can't deny them that."

Arsenal's form
"I don't think we've handed it to Arsenal. If you win your last eleven games you
deserve to win the League, and I don't think they've lost a goal in the last five
games -  that's Championship form.

"They'll come here and show their normal aggression and they'll try to win. They'll be
positive. It's up to us to make sure they don't win the League here. We need to keep
the whole thing bubbling along."

Players ready
The players will be wanting to make up for last week's disappointment. That's the
great thing about football - they always have the next game to do that. They have
enough character and determination to overcome the disappointment of last week. The
fans will help, too. It should be a great atmosphere on Wednesday."

United's form
"Our form has been good, I've had no problems with that. The semi-final was unusual -
when you play Germans you have to get used to the continuity of the game being broken
up, it's stop start stop start. We should have done better though.

"We're always looking to improve ourselves, but next season we won't have the early
season form we showed this season. You can rest assured of that."
Bringing people in?

"We're always looking to strengthen, sometimes it's from within. Players develop and
break through, and sometimes you have to go out and buy. We've not been a big buying
club over the years, we've been sensible."

Veron stories

"It's rubbish, it's lies from the press and I don't know why they're doing this. We're
taking legal advice. I don't like the persistence of these stories. I know the press
have a difficult job but the truth seems to be a foreign item to them. There's no
foundation in these stories.

"I think Seba's done fine, I've been pleased with his form. It's been a press thing
that he's struggled."

Fergie's horse winning the 2,000 Guineas.
"It was great, very pleasing. It's a different atmosphere, no pressure. It's different
from football - that's built up with the tension and the adreneline releases at final
whistle. On Saturday when the horse won it was just unbridled emotions."

We're looking forward to it. It should be a terrific game. We just have to do our job.

It is almost certain that the World Cup squad will be made up of the 21 players on the

The duo will miss the start of the training camp in Clairfontaine between May 14-19

Lemerre has until May 21 to name the 23 players he'll be taking to South Korea and
Japan for the World Cup. The team is expected to leave on May 19.

overnight and it takes time. I think he's experienced what life in England is like

"People are looking at United and the fact that maybe they aren't going to win
anything and they're looking for someone to blame. That's not fair because when they
have won things in the past they have always done so as a team and now it they don't
win anything it will be as a team. You can't just blame Veron for what's happened and
quite simply you can't win everything every year. No team does that and things have
not gone for United this season, while they have for Arsenal. The team has not been
stable this season, particularly in defence where we've seen Jaap Stam leave and
Laurent Blanc come in. They've been chopping and changing and we've seen Wes Brown
come in and then go out and Ronny Johnsen do the same and so on and United have not
had that stability any team needs at the centre of their defence. They've also had
injury problems and Wes Brown and Ronny Johnsen have been out, while Roy Keane and
David Beckham have also missed key parts of the season. So to try and say !
it's all down to Veron is nonsense. The same thing happened with Teddy Sheringham the
last time United didn't win anything in 1998."

The first full, independent and objective view of the life of one of the most
successful managers of all time Ferguson's own autobiography, MANAGING MY LIFE, was a
great bestseller on its publication in 1999, with fans queuing in their hundreds in
bookshops. But Fergie's book told the story through only one pair of eyes. Now,
Michael Crick, acclaimed biographer of Jeffrey Archer, writes the first full-rounded,
independent portrait of Sir Alex. From his roots as a Govan trade unionist to the
current peaks of world football, Crick applies the same forsensic skills he applied to
the disgraced Tory peer. Through hundreds of interviews with those who've known and
worked with Sir Alex, and delving back through the archives, Michael Crick explores
the money and the politics of football, the bust-ups, the fights, and those memorable
moments of glory. Charismatic and charming, volcanic and ruthless, searingly ambitious
and astonishingly successful. What makes Sir Alex Ferguson tick? H!
ow did this complex character become the most successful manager in British football,
producing -- first at Aberdeen and now at Manchester United -- two of the most
prolific trophy-grabbing machines in the modern game? Red Alex is essential reading
not just for Manchester United fans and football followers in general, but for anyone

[14] Fergie throws out the press

Posted Tuesday, May 7, 2002 by bar-knee:
>From the SUN

'ALEX FERGUSON flew into a rage yesterday over criticism of Juan Veron.

Furious Fergie threw out the media at a press conference at Manchester United's
Carrington training ground.

In a heated defence of his British record £28.1million buy, Ferguson denied the
Argentine had struggled this season, describing him as "a f.....g brilliant player."

The subject of Veron was still to be put to Ferguson when he went into the rage.

He shouted: "You tell me what is wrong with Veron? Well, I think he has been playing
well."

Veron was reported to have been targeted by some United players as tempers frayed at
Leverkusen airport over their European Cup exit last week.

United denied the bust-up with a measured statement on Monday.

Yesterday Ferguson went a step further.

He said: "I do not know what this stuff is about, fights and the rest of it. It is all
nonsense, absolute lies. People should try to understand what a player's feelings are
like."

Ferguson went on to refer to certain media assessments of the Argentine's performances
this year as "a disgrace" and "a joke."

But he refused to say whether Veron, 27, would start in tomorrow's title crunch with
Arsenal at Old Trafford.'

"Arsenal may be going for the double at Old Trafford on Wednesday, but with 67,000
fans cheering for Manchester United, I don't think they will. I feel that too many
factors point against them in this game. First and foremost is Manchester United's
desire not to lose the title on their own ground. The players are bitterly
disappointed with their exit from the Champions League and will not want to finish the
season with their successors as champions celebrating in their home.

Secondly, history has shown that it's virtually impossible to go the whole season
without losing a match away from home. Arsenal came closest in 1991, losing just one
game, but it hasn't been done in modern football.

Finally, Sir Alex Ferguson will have his side really fired up for this one. Arsene
Wenger will as well of course and it won't be easy, but Arsenal had a big game over
the weekend and will have in the back of their minds that they can still win it
against Everton next week."

"We should anticipate activity in the close season. The manager will sit down and the
two of us will discuss what is going to happen. We are not suddenly going to change
all the players and turn everything upside down. That’s not the process here. This is
not a one-year, one-event club. There are, though, players heading for the end of
their contracts and so you would expect room for manoeuvre."

[3] Butt defends Veron

"Maybe he is not a typical United midfielder who tackles like mad, but he always gives
100 per cent. He works hard and gets his foot in and his ability on the ball, as he
showed against Deportivo, is brilliant to watch. I think he has been judged a little
too harshly on his first season. The price tag had a lot to do with that. But I have
no doubt he will come good in the end. It's great to have a player like Seba in your
dressing room. Personally, I think he is one of the best players in the world and he
just needs to be given a break . People should just leave him alone and let him get on
with playing his football."

United Reserves 1 Leeds 2

Muirhead the scorer for the United team already crowned as Champions. Tate hit the bar
in the 89th minute. Decent crowd at Altrincham's ground - our new reserve home for
next season we wonder?

"It's bad timing, but there's nothing I can do about it," he said. "I hope England do
very well in the summer."
"But my main concern now is to get fit for Manchester United next season because we
have a big season next season.

"We want to do better in Europe, while we also want to try to wrap up the title
quicker. The positive side of it is it gives me a rest and hopefully the injury will
heal properly and correctly.

"You're going to go through your career and have ups and downs and you're going to
have to deal with all the different things that happen to you.

"You have to deal with everything at this club and it's a test of character when you
get injured."
