My guess is the black box in the tail is connected to the tail lamps and tells 
the tail light indicator in the dash what to do. 
There is a diode plugged into the left side harness next to the main frame tube 
just after the two tubes join the main forward tube. That is about 1" behind 
the aft side of the carb assy. That diode will affect the gear change indicator 
and neutral. The diode is black and about 7x7x18 mm and has a number of 2B 1GHI 
on it
The wire and harness breakdown on Honda Parts Direct for your bike shows item 
10 as a silicon rectifier. That's the unit

My bike is a '85 CB650SC but yours should be similar.
