Take the cable off and see if it is broken, and then lube it up

One annoyance on my otherwise good-running' 92 is a defect in the tach.

No, it's not the dreaded dead tach, but one that sometimes works and sometimes
not. I get either good readings, no read, or wild swings of the needle, and I
can sometimes get it to work right by tapping sharply and repeatedly on the
glass.  The other tach housing functions, e.g. warning lights, all work
normally.

Anyone know what's wrong, and whether it's fixable without busting open the
sealed tach case?

Thanks in advance,
