I just got my front forks done last night. The book is pretty good at
explaining how to do this but has you tearing apart every little thing. I
didn't go that far so you need to decide ahead of time if you're going to
inspect every spring and seal on the dang thing or not. I did, however, inspect
my brake pads and found a problem there. One side was dragging and caused the
other side to wear faster. I took both side apart and lubed the pins and
changed the pads on the worn side.
One thing that will help you no matter what bike you're changing the fork
seals on: always put the spring back into the upper tube and screw it in
temporarily when removing or putting the hex nuts back in the bottom of the
tube after assembly. Another thing that you should do is to thoroughly read the
instructions in your factory manual before doing the job. You will need a tool
for tamping in your sliders and fork seals at the end of the job. I found an
old iron pipe that was perfect. Another suggestion from Dennis was to use some
silicone around the inside of the dust seal to keep moisture out. It is a
brilliant idea. I used a small screwdriver and carefully put a bead just inside
of the lower fork tube after putting it all together. I put the dust seal down
and wiped off the excess. I was careful not to get it on the slider. this was
my second fork seal job so I'm sure that the old pros have more advice but
that's what I've discovered so far. HotrodMamma.

  Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] forks

I have been restoring my 84 700S for the past two years. I am almost
finished with it. It rides great and I love it. I was thinking about
rebuilding the front forks. I have never done that before. Have any of you
personally done this task? How hard was it and were you satisfied with the
results? Any tips?
  Mike
