Thinking of the optimum displacement per cylinder for optimum effeciency, your
opinion is right on, there, Dennis...

But it would make one hell of a dune buggy. Maybe I'll turn my 650 into a kart
too...

I remember them well. Not as good as the 350's (IMHO) still more than enough to
scare you good. I've seen RD250's used in class C shifters. It may be dry but
it feels like the pavement is wet... light 'em up out of every corner. Drive
one long enough and you get Popeye arms. Really wears you out trying to drive
one.

A shifter 450 ! That would be like having an F1 car to play with. Or at least a
pro-stock. Great smokey burn outs. Build it.

My buddy has his old yamaha RD450 that his psycho-ex ran over. The frame is
toast but the engine is still good. He's got this insane idea of building a
cart for that engine. I keep trying to convince him to go dunebuggy since we
live near the coast.

If I was younger, wealthier, etc... I'd go back to sportsman dirt racing or
legends cars. A car with a bike engine is something I understand. The last time
I drove a race car was years ago at Nazareth (before it closed) in a Busch car
during practice. My lap times would have put me 23rd on the field. Big
surprise, I don't like pavement racing. Other than an X-6 based drag bike I
built, I've never wanted to race bikes.

Yeah, it's much cheaper for me to go race someone else's carts for the night,
even if they are governed. I looked into autocross one year, that's a ton of
money and time too.

I raced karts in WKA light A for years. I still miss it. There are three tracks
around here that run weekly during the season. Best I ever did was fifth in
points one year. The format is three heats / 12 laps@ motocross style. The high
cost of the 100cc class cars made for smaller turnouts along the way and now
it's almost all four stroke karts. That's as much fun as kissing your sister.
Big thing now is 600 sprints. Big $$ racing (at least after karts) Even karts
are waaay costly now. I thought 1500 for a rolling frame was salty.

I'm not that serious about it. No $$ and I'm not in town enough for a series.
There's an indoor track in Houston. It used to be a dept store that they
knocked all of walls out of. The differences between these tracks and others is
that they use real shifter carts (governed) and they have spotters along the
track. If a slow cart is holding up the faster carts the spotters flag it to
pull over and let the faster ones pass. You get a dozen laps per heat and a
print out at the end of your individual and average lap times. The fastest cart
in each heat is in bold. I only got flagged to pull over once the whole night
for going to slow. My buddy that speaks carburetor just drives a much cleaner
line than I do. I'm just glad the track is far enough away that I'm not there
blowing my $$ every weekend :) The trip over there makes a nice ride though,
and since you need to bring your own helmet anyhow, it's just an excuse to get
together on our bikes.

My Shoei is both DOT and SNELL approved. Most fullface, non-modular, helmets
these days are. I've used mine for racing gokarts.

Are they SNELL approved?  My "problem" (if you will) is that in addition to
riding, I auto-cross my car.  SCCA/BMWCCA rules state that I have to have a
minimum of a SNELL approved M helmet (motorcycle).

The best solution to that problem is to buy one tight front to back so it fits
side to side, Then apply a ball peen hammer gently to the inner liner so
provide for proper fit. No harm in slightly compressing the foam to make it fit
right. I've had to do it to a couple along the way. Personally, I can't stand a
loose fit. They stretch out way too soon anyway. Yes, Shoei makes a great
helmet. I wore them for years till the prices went above 350. Now they can be
over 700. Too pricey for me. Bells now are rebranded Italian somethings. This
coming season, I'll be looking for a new one for warm weather use.
