Thanks for the reply, Dennis.
For my own edification, what part of my description makes it obvious
that the starter clutch is bad? From what I've read, it's only supposed
to turn one way, which mine still does. I'd like to make doubly sure
that this is the problem before I start cracking the crankcase open.

Yes. The problem is a cracked starter clutch. Replace it and ride on.

I finally was able to start my '82 CB450SC this weekend. I bought it
after it was sitting in my friend's garage for about 5-6 years. He
originally garaged it with an intermittent starter problem, saying
that he could hear the starter spin, but the engine wouldn't turn
over. When I got the bike, the starter was missing, so I picked up a
used one from the local salvage yard, and installed it. After
finishing dealing with the rust in my tank, and making sure my carbs
aren't all nastied up, I got it running. Took a couple of attempts,
but it started, and ran for about a minute. I then turned it off, and
attempted to start it up again a couple of minutes later. Now, it
appears that the starter problem that it was originally garaged with
is back. If I try to turn the bike over, I can hear the starter
whirring, but not engaging. I pulled the starter out to make sure
that the teeth were all still there, and they are.
Any ideas?
