Whoa.. stop. Cracking the crankcase open ? No way. The starter clutch is on the end of the crank. Now get a grip. The starter motor turns the driven gear and the driven gear runs against three rollers in the clutch body. When all this works right, the rollers jam up and the whole thing turns as one. When the motor starts, the rollers spin free. They "cam" up to start. When the starter clutch is cracked, it opens up a bit and the rollers don't jam. Hence... it doesn't work. I've seen lots of 'em. They hook up just fine by hand, not with a ton of force. It's fooling you. You'll need one special tool, a rotor puller. Threads in against the crank and as it tightens, it forces the rotor off. Clutch right behind it. Get a used one and inspect it for cracks, no new parts anymore. Getv the driven assembly too. Inspect for smooth surface, waves are only for the beach. Wrecked bikes are best for motor parts 'cause that why they are there, not mechanical failure. Parts same for any 400~450 twin. Order a new cover gasket, that you will need.

Thanks for the reply, Dennis. For my own edification, what part of my description makes it obvious that the starter clutch is bad? From what I've read, it's only supposed to turn one way, which mine still does. I'd like to make doubly sure that this is the problem before I start cracking the crankcase open.
