I don't have a manual in front of me and it's been years since I did one. I just went to a parts site and it looks as if it's a motorectomy. That sux. So many are outside the cases.. 175,200,250,etc. Oh well, my call still stands, clutch bad. A sucky job is now a ghastly one. But still not as bad as some. The lower case does not hold the transmission together, it's almost self contained. The lower case is more of an oil pan. Now you will need a clutch cover gasket too. In an hour and a half, I'd have it in my hands. Add a torque wrench to the tool list. (main caps and rods) No need to disassemble the top end, Just take out the cam so the chain is loose and you can lift out the crank. Take off the rod caps and leave the pistons in the bores. When you get to see the starter clutch, look at the bottom of the channels that the rollers ride in. That's where the cracks will be. The contact surface might be wavy too, very common.

Huh, I guess I'm just confused then, because the only reference to a starter clutch I can find in my service manual is under the part for the electric starter gears, and it says you have to remove the crankshaft to access. Is the starter clutch located on the starter itself, or inside the engine? On 3/16/2010 8:56 PM, Dennis Hammerl wrote: > >Whoa.. stop. Cracking the crankcase open ? No way.
