316 will rust, as I have learned, but not nearly as fast as 304, which didn't
last a week in my first wire cathode and anode.
What am I saying - it didn't last past 125 miles, a trip to my sister's funeral
and back.  But it produced a greater volume than the steel rods, so I
switched.  My first 316 wire one was with thin, easy to manipulate, .020.  It
didn't last a week, but man it improved the mileage better than any rod type I
had made to date, and was much less expensive to make.

You might be right. Some 20 years ago I was on a termination of some parts
(black box) and the stainless steal was a number I had not seen, but could have
been 316. Too long ago to remember, but the engineer with me told me that stuff
won't ever rust. Made me remember when you posted.

If it is, I have been ordering the wrong thing.  I use it (316 stainless
wire) to electrolyse water into hydrogen and oxygen to use in engines to
increase mileage.  Ask Kim.  She knows about that.  I have been developing my
own for about 4 years now and finally have the best I can offer for the money.
You still have to clean any design out every couple of months, because even
with 316 the corrosion builds up.  Mine is easy to clean and easy to re-coil
the "rods," which are actually coils of wire thick enough to last longer than a
month.  The best on the market, I think, is a very expensive unit that sells
for over $2,000 and has a year warranty, and can expect a useful life of about
5 years, changing out the parts as they get eaten up by the electrolysis.
I have been thinking of - not actually working on - one to use on bikes, and I
think I have it now.  It will be made with cpvc pipe, to be safe if you have a
crash.  Ones I make for autos are made of glass.  You can actually watch the
bubbles coming off the  rods.  I will put a loop in the clear tubing to the
intake so you can still visibly see the flow, with water in the loop moving as
the gasses push past it and into the intake. So soon I will have one on my 450.

I thought it was 361 not 316.

So, you have a twofold benefit:  unlike stainless, nothing leaves the blade
when using, to enter your food; and they maintain their sharp edge better.  Oh,
and the third thing you mentioned:  no corrosion.  Stainless, unless it's 316l,
will corrode, and also will stick to a magnet.  316 will, but barely.
And surgical grade does hold an edge better.

I love them, started with the smallest to see if i like there quality, then 8
months later i bought the large one... and even a year and a half after the
first there still sharper then the steel ones... Its not that there great
quality, but it is a great price for them.... The big deal for me with them is
that ceramic wont rust in the saltwater marine envroment.... So far its held up
quite well

Interesting - I looked at those knives when I was at Harbor Freight, myself.  I
wondered about if they're brittle.  If you like them, maybe I should reconsider?

You are better off with the enamel one.  Stainless will taint your brew, IMHO.
There is also a new, sort of ceramic cookware.  Not Corning, but similar.
Heats well, holds heat, and easy to clean, even if you burn something in them.
I know; I burned some chicken when I was making a chicken spaghetti sauce.  It
takes a lot less heat to cook with that stuff.
Doesn't add anything to what you're cooking - like iron, nickel, aluminum, or
teflon, etc.

ok, so its not about nighthawks.. or even bikes... but im just starting to brew
my own extract beer and i was wondering if anybody has any expirence with using
an enamel coated pot instead of stainless... i can get the enamel one for $13
where the stainless one is going to be $40... i dont plan to use the cheep one
forever, just long enough untill i can afford the stainless one

thanks
