I'd still look first at the petcock. I had all kinds of symptoms, easy start, hard start, leaking, no leak, gas smell, no smell, flooding at start, even fuel starvation during a long run at high speed, and nothing consistent. It went on for weeks like that until we figured out what it was. And I agree, your regularly moving the petcock handle after not having seldom done so may have triggered it or made it worse.
