I would wager one or more of the bowls are flooding. A strong smell of raw gas is a dead give away and a leaking float seat is usually the culprit. The onset of the problem also matches your symptoms pretty well. You probably wouldn't notice an external leak with this design of carb, unless it's really bad it'll probably flow right into the engine. Watch out for hydrolock when you go to start it. Just bump the starter with the ignition off to make sure it spins freely. I could be entirely wrong and the gas cap might night be sealing, a breather tube on one carb might be clogged, vacuum hose, torn fuel pump diaphragm (that bike even have a fuel pump?) a thousand other things. Start poking around.
