That's odd. I checked out an exploded view of the petcock for your model on the Cheap Cycle Parts site before I responded. There were two versions there, both of which showed intake tube/filter screen combos very similar to the later model 750, which is why I mentioned the similarity.
Neither looks to be like the one you're describing. I'm wondering if yours is stock, or if maybe an earlier/later version of the two at that site. (?) If you plan to run without the screen-type filter, I'd suggest adding an aftermarket in-line filter, especially since the tank has been lined.
