I think I have it! The filter comes with a small black spacer, which
the tech at my local shop said fits into the filter then slides onto
the intake tube. I removed that, slide the filter over, and, voila, it
centers perfectly, slips right into the tank, and, best of all, NO
LEAKS!!  Woot!

As for the cap seal, my painter was a little sloppy with the lining
material and/or the bondo within the edge of the raised lip around the
opening. I carefully scraped and sanded out all that material and used
a bit of scotchbrite to clean up and make sure that lip is flat and
clean, so we'll see when I finally fill 'er up if I still have a
problem with leakage. I sure hope not, cause it means stopping more
frequently to gas up, and it harms the nice new paint.

Anyhoo, thanks for the tips! Filter's in place, so off I go!!!
