Here's a couple passages from book 1 that really intrigue me and are on my eventual to-do list.
It's from the ride overview of the Lookout Mountain Loop (GA/AL/TN lines), an hour off I-75: "This ride is an adrenaline rush right from the start. GA 136 climbs Lookout Mountain in a series of twisting curves followed by brief straightaways. The view into the valley below is spectacular..." Then, "This route gets technical (approaching TN) and twists and turns welcome you to the state. This end of the loop gives easy access to popular tourist attractions -- Ruby Falls, Rock City, The Incline Railway and Point Park." Point Park (National Park Service) is the cheapest ($2) and provides awe-inspiring views of the city of Chattanooga and the mighty Tennesse River. Here's the part I like most: "Back in Georgia on 189, you'll notice the total lack of anything on the west side of the road. 189 sits just feet away from the sheer western bluff of Lookout Mountain. As you ride along, the sensation of flight is inevitable." If you fancy actually flying, "stop at Lookout Mountain Flight Park, a mecca for hang gliders. You can watch people jump off the mountain all day." Or, for a hundred bucks, rent a rig and an instructor and try hang-gliding yourself (!) The beauty of this guy's "loop" approach is that I can see any of these as day trips out of Atlanta. Each takes an hour, maybe two. You can string several together if, like your trip, you'll have more time. Or you can establish a base camp (motel or campground), leave your gear there, explore all you like, and come back at the end of the day, rather than run out of daylight and have to scramble for lodging (during the tourist season).
