Been there, done that, bought the hat and buckle.

I was raised and started riding in California. LA area to be exact.  It can be a good thing when your young and agile.  However, the width of the bike makes a big difference.  When I was riding my Kawai KZ 175 or Suzuki GT 550 or my CB 750, no problem.  When I got my Hog, now it was a problem because of my bat wing fairing.  If I was splitting and came to two (2) F-250's or 350's stopped and their side mirrors were adjacent to each other, them, your done until traffic moves.  I don't know if it is still the law in California but you can only lane split until the traffic is flowing less than 35 MPH, then you have to integrate back in.    I'm in my 50's and don't care to try it now.  It's illegal in Texas.  At least bikers here can ride the HOV lanes anytime of the day without impunity.

They would have to do a bunch of public service announcements prior to changing laws to make people aware that not only it is now legal, but also the benefits of it. When I first got to CA I didn't know it was legal and I remember being a bit pissed in traffic because the bikes were lane splitting. Once I knew it was not only legal but prevented overheating the air cooled bikes I was ok with it.

It puts all the responsibility on the biker. As he says, if a girl is on a
cell phone and pulls out on me I am responsible. It may work in Iowa, but
it would never work in Penna. The drivers in PA would run you off the road.
I was in a cage, going to the burm to an exit and people flipped out over
that.

That said if the cagger is not watching and coming toward me, while traffic
is slowing down. I am so there. It is often the only escape from collision
situations.

I do agree that pulling in between cars to move up to the front at red
lights is a good idea. It let's us get out of the clusters of cars that tend
to travel together, and prevents getting rear ended.

Looks like a new way to give bikers a bad reputation.
We don't need that.
