Sounds just like what mine is/was doing.  I ran some Seafoam through it hoping 
to just clean the carbs a little.  Not much effect.  Mine would occasionally 
back fire, too.  Now, when I ride, I turn the fuel off when I am very close to 
stopping.  So far, that seems to have solved my problem.

Analysis:
Starter - probably weak and will replace when I can
Battery - I bought a new strong battery. Old one was definitely bad.
Fuel petcock - plan to rebuild when I can.  I think it is leaking fuel into 
carbs when hot.  (Biggest issue, I think for me and maybe you)
