If only one side is showing symptoms, I'd prioritize troubleshooting a lean condition before I messed with timing. "Too lean" and "overly retarded timing" can present very similar symptoms.
I'd start by dropping that left side carb's bowl, just to see what sort of crud you're dealing with.
