You are correct in half of the above statement, namely the part that if John knew what's coming, he "could" have made more money. However, I don't know if John is making any money in any way with his own work, much less through "translation stuff," while I suspect that he is spending a substantial money as a constant traveler. So, he is probably not interested in making money, at least for the time being. I also note that despite his regular references to other people's opinions, he is not telling us what was wrong and why doomsday was coming, proving again that he is just a reading automaton.
