Hello Folks
Time, methinks, for my twopenn'orth. When I took over The Sage
Gateshead's Weekend School pipes lessons from Jim Hall, Jessica was one
of the participants. She mentioned the Kathryn Tickell connection at
our first lesson just before Christmas 2008 and when I quizzed her
further she admited she had had 1 lesson from her.
I have made her aware of several things to work on in her playing and
said the same in her last report. We've got to remember that she is
just a bairn who is no better than adults at changing bad habits. This
is never an overnight process even for the most dedicated and talented
players. If she listens to advice and works hard over the coming years
she might indeed match early promise but she will have to do this for
herself and in her own good time. At the moment she is being pushed
extremely hard by mother and grandmother. The pressure on her is
enormous. Yes, the clip sounded poor and yes, the article itself was
unfortunate but Jessica isn't responsible. It's time to cut her some
slack. What she needs most at the moment is our understanding and
support.
As aye
Anthony

Wayne,
I don't think it is fair to say she "attacked someone" just because she
pointed out deficiencies in piping. It may be unfair, as the youngster
in this case has a teacher and a mentor who think this sloppy playing
style is acceptable, but it was not inaccurate.
