Thanks Malcom, 

I tried and it works however the problem  we are having is as follows:

1:  we installed OFFICE 97 by creating a MSI package 
2:  we assigned the package through the RIS ( remote installation services) 
3 : the package get installed, however everytime we log on, Windows
installer is 
     rerun to install the office pakage 
4:  We had this behaviour on windows 2000/pro but was resolved  installig
compatws.inf
5: we cannot resolve on Windows/XP 

any idea
