Whoa there. This doesn't sound like it has anything to do with compatws.inf, which affects Group Policy security settings. First, how did you create the msi package? Did you use the Custom Installation Wizard for Office or some other 3rd party .msi creation tool? If you used something else, I would highly recommend using the Custom Installation Wizard. When you created the package, did you tell it to install everything to the local disk or did you do a standard install? You don't assign packages through RIS, you assign them through Group Policy. Unless you are talking about having created a RIS image that included an install of Office 97. And are you assigning them to the computer or to the user in Group Policy (if indeed that is what you are using)? Provide answers to these questions, and we will be much closer to helping you figure out what is wrong.
