That is service pack 2. Which should be fine, but if you want you can
install service pack 3. However I dont beleive installing SP3 will help you.

I aggree with you, I think its safe to assume this promblem is specific this
laptop. My hunch is that there is a service that starts automaticaly that is
the culprit. To eliminate this as a possible cause. Perform the following
steps. 

1. Log into you pc (the pc that works fine) and write down all the services
that are running on your system. You can best view the running services by
typing 'net start' at the command prompt.

2. Log into this laptop that is not working as expected. Right click on the
'my Computer' icon and choose manage. goto the services section. Look in the
status feild. STOP all services that are not in the list you generated from
step 1. 

3. Log out of the laptop, but do not reboot because the services you just
stop will get restarted if the system reboots.

4. log in to the laptop for resulte.

Right click on the 'My Computer' icon and select properties. In the General
tab you will see info about the system that should include a service pack
level.

Try having this user log into the network using a different system that
operates fine. This will tell you whether you are dealing with a problem
that confined to the laptop or tied to this particular user's network
account settings.

What happens when you log into the laptop with a different account that
works fine on other systems?

What service pack are you running on this laptop?
