i have checked the setting in system and roaming profile has been grayed
out, so i am assuming that he is using his local profile, altho his local
profile did look quite large.

i did get an error in the event view that the dns is not registering, that
could be it so i did an ipconfig/registerdns

Just a little thought: If you are logging on to Win2k DC with AD, then
check
your DNS configurations and such like. Also you might want to check whether
or not he is using a roaming profile, if so, is the profile too large and
hence taking a long time to download, has he got a large cache of Internet
Explorer files in his IE cache folders.

Windows 2000 does cache profiles locally to speed things up. However, this
can be disabled so it doesn't cache it locally. You may wish to check this
as well. Good luck.
