You are probably better off getting a library backup unit connected to your best server and have that system backup all of the other systems. But if money is a constraint you may have to go with the single tape drives per server. Keep in mind that each server you have a tape drive in is a separate backup server license (unless you use NTBACKUP). Where with the library unit, you just get one backup server license and then remote agent licenses for each server you want to backup. The agent software usually has some sort of open file option that will allow you to backup open files. Determine your budget. If you can afford a library unit, go that route.

For 3-5 servers, should I buy a tape drive for each server and perform the backup separately or use one or two servers to do the job ? 2. In latter case, how can I recover the servers with no tape drive ? 3. Some services keep files open, should I shut-down these files/services b4 backup: - Trend ServerProtect - MSDTC.LOG, don't know what it is - Files in c:\winnt\ntfrs\jet... - Files in c:\winnt\registration\... - DHCP, WINS services - NETLOGON.CHG ?? As always, thank you.
