Because you're asking an application to take a snapshot of a file in a
possibly inconsistent state, and in order to do this successfully,
you'll need to install another driver on your system that will allow it
to gain access to files that would otherwise be exclusively locked by
another process.

Which is worse?  Getting a message that a file is not available for
backup, which allows you to take steps to have it available, or having
the backup sail through, only to perform a later restore and have your
app complain that the data in the file is corrupt?

And you're paying for the privilege of the second option.

I prefer the 1st option.
