We use the following scenario:
15 servers running accelerator agent and open file options.
1 Backup machine connected to a dlt changer( DLT is much better than dat in
my opinion).
Backup Exec 8.6 with IDR option (on a windows 2000 workstation computer).
Backups all go across a separate network.
Open File Option on all servers.
Backup all drives on all servers to the DLT changer.
In the past 2 years we have never had problems restoring files.

We used to do all backups to seperate drives but it gets very difficult to
monitor/manage.

I am with you on the open file option.
I think it sucks and causes more problems. But some people are comfortable
with this.
The best bet is like you say, stop and start services with scripts.

I'd recommend a single server with its own tape drive or tape library.

Also, if your network is small, and not 24x7, then you can script
services to stop and restart as appropriate.

I don't use open file managers, and although I am not disparaging their
robustness or stability, I don't agree with the concept in principle.
Plus they add cost.

DTC is the distributed transaction coordinator, most often associated
with SQL.

Subject: Backup Strategy Questions

I have questions:

1. For 3-5 servers, should I buy a tape drive for each server and
perform the backup separately or use one or two servers to do the job ?
2. In latter case, how can I recover the servers with no tape drive ? 3.
Some services keep files open, should I shut-down these files/services
b4
backup:
- Trend ServerProtect
- MSDTC.LOG, don't know what it is
- Files in c:\winnt\ntfrs\jet...
- Files in c:\winnt\registration\...
- DHCP, WINS services
- NETLOGON.CHG ??

As always, thank you.
