I used U-promote on two different ProLiant PL1600 Compaq servers both with RAID controllers. Each machine was a PDC of different domains that I was consolidating into a third. I demoted them to member servers and then promoted them to BDC's of the third NT domain. Worked flawlessly. U-Promote was worth every penny.

Unless you are trying to make it a stand alone machine and keep the user accounts at the same time. If so, there is no Microsoft-supported method for doing this. There is a 3rd-party tool, call U-Promote (www.u-tools.com), that will demote a BDC to a member server.
