This is a unfortunate reality with unmanaged switches and many nics.  

In addition to other suggestions, confirm all apps are shutdown, even
background apps in the system tray.  Then use extended - giant ping
packets (> 1500k) to confirm if it's a nic throughput issue, or
something at an upper layer.  Ping's really good here as it's a
lightweight app.  If you see odd data patterns in return time and packet
loss you still have a layer 2 issue (duplex mismatch, etc).

E.g.
C:\ping -t -l 2000 "IP address on same subnet"

Might also be worth buying a $50 8 port switch, just to confirm the
integrity of this port/switch.

The fact that it's an unmanaged switch means there's little chance it
will ever do full duplex. I haven't seen anything, including Cisco's, do
full duplex autonegotiation well.
