FYI, I have posted this question on http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/133586/bug-unwanted-gap-in-2nd-columnset Marco and phg were able to reproduce the problem, including in the latest versions. I don't plan to keep posting in both places, but wanted to leave a pointer from this thread to the other one.
