Fortunately or unfortunately, most people now use email based mail list clients and the "respond" at the top style is the easiest for people to use.
In my defense, it's easier for people to read, especially if we're all too lazy to snip out the irrelevant stuff in our reply. In other words, this reply could go either way, but the usual three sentences at the top of a huge chain, would mean that people don't ever find my pithy comments...
