Years ago, when I was transitioning between jobs (I was finishing up college) my wife called our cable company and said I was unemployed (not really accurate) and that we wanted to cancel service, or at least drop it down to basic cable. We ended up getting more tiers, premium channels, etc for 3 or 6 months or something, and they knocked $20/month off the cable bill.
