I'm not a big fan of wide either, unless it's a big enough display. On
average widescreens are also smaller, about 10% less pixels than their
normal aspect ratio counterparts. Having things side by side on one
display is only beneficial on 24" or larger monitors IMO.

I do however, like to take a 23" normal aspect monitor, and turn it 90
degrees to create a really TALL screen right next to my 24" widescreen.
It's great for applications that are vertically LONG. (My Inbox, some
Excel files, Websites, docs, programming tools, etc).

I find it that I more applications that require more vertical real
estate than horizontal. Even most of my spreadsheets are long, not
wide.

Two word docs side by side

One word doc and a browser

Etc...

Having to scroll/move windows to fit full lines left-to-right as you
read EACH LINE is a _PAIN_. Scrilling one page up at a time is muuuuch
better.

But, rarely do I need to have JUST a doc open... a widescreen monitor
lets me do that and still have access to other junk on the screen.

I personally don't see a benefit to the widescreen for typical computer
work. You could get a few more spreadsheet columns on a widescreen, or
more area to display if you're using a graphics program. If the price
is the same or within a few bucks, get the wide. Otherwise, I don't see
the value.

Folks,

I"m about to start purchasing for our annual PC refresh cycle. I
normally purchase 17" monitors (we are a Dell shop) but I see I can get
19" regular and 19" wide screen for just a bit more. Anyone care to
comment on the benefit of wide v. regular size?

Thanks,
