A couple of years ago I thought I was doing a great thing by upgrading
our Finance department from 17 regular screens to 19 inch wide screens.
Some people were OK with it, but for most they were disappointed because
the size of the text on the 19 inch wide screens at their native
resolution (1440 x 900) was noticeably smaller than on the 17 inchers
running at 1020 x 768. We were able to make some adjustments using the
windows settings to use larger fonts and changing the dpi settings.

However, the text in the main application they use, Sage MAS 90, was
unaffected by changing the Windows font size, and changing the dpi
settings caused parts of the screen to be off the side of the monitor.
After lots of complaints about headaches, eye strain, and back and
shoulder pain (presumably from leaning forward all day to read the
screen) we ended up getting them new 22 inch widescreens, and a few
opted for 19 inch regular screens.

Now everyone is happy.

Two word docs side by side

One word doc and a browser

Etc...

Having to scroll/move windows to fit full lines left-to-right as you
read EACH LINE is a _PAIN_. Scrilling one page up at a time is muuuuch
better.

But, rarely do I need to have JUST a doc open... a widescreen monitor
lets me do that and still have access to other junk on the screen.

I personally don't see a benefit to the widescreen for typical computer
work. You could get a few more spreadsheet columns on a widescreen, or
more area to display if you're using a graphics program. If the price
is the same or within a few bucks, get the wide. Otherwise, I don't see
the value.

Folks,

I"m about to start purchasing for our annual PC refresh cycle. I
normally purchase 17" monitors (we are a Dell shop) but I see I can get
19" regular and 19" wide screen for just a bit more. Anyone care to
comment on the benefit of wide v. regular size?

Thanks,
