Don't forget to consider app dependencies on the server in question...
Exchange 2007 for instance.. isn't currently supported on R2 at all, and
this would probably also fall under the MS decree of "don't upgrade the
underlying OS on a functional Exchange Server"

I've Google'd this and have found less information that I expected. The
consensus seems to be that it should work if the stars are properly
aligned. The key is you need to already be running the 64-bit version of
2008; you can't jump from 32-bit to 64-bit.
