I'm with you. first thing I try is increasing memory. If a Windows XP machine doesn't have at least a gig of memory (for an "office" machine running Word, Excel, Outlook, etc) then I boost it up to at least a gig of memory. After that, there are other things I'll do like check to make sure there's not something running in the background (Google Updater, etc) that's eating CPU/memory. I'll also recommend that the users reboot at least weekly to make sure there is no memory leak (they don't understand "memory leak" but they understand "it may run faster if you reboot.")
