A brief, further comment and update on this thread.  After posting my reply 
regarding the 'open' method, I did some further testing on the Linux platform 
and discovered that yes, there is indeed a problem with calling Tile from 
inside 'open'; and specifically doing so in multi-threaded mode -- it tends to 
completely lock up my version of Nuke!

So.. I wish to retract that comment, and say that after moving the Tile call 
from 'open' to 'engine', things seem to be going much better.  Guard'ing and 
testing first-access in 'engine' is now my preferred methodology, until someone 
at The Foundry posts more info on multi-threading Tile from inside 'open'.
