I've been using Kinect and Touchdesigner to do small-scale scanning.
Some custom GLSL to preview the point cloud, and It writes out to .OBJ
and .BGEO files.
Converting from text to points could be done with ease in Houdini or
TouchDesigner. Then saved out as an image or geometry.
