For a laptop I don't think "built-in" is a bad thing if they do it right. 

I just bought a couple of Compaq laptops along with their MultiPort modules
and they work quite well. Apparenty the manufacturers are building decent
antennas into the covers/lcd and the range is quite good, at leats on these.
I'd say comparable to the Orinoco USB I was using and far better than the
Linksys card and some better than the Orinoco Gold (sans external antenna).
