I've been through this registrant change a few times, especially recently when our company merged with another to create a third. 100+ that had the original company as the registrant had to be changed to the new merger company. Registrant contact details can be changed easily enough, just not the legal name. Tech, Admin and Billing records are fully editable.
Can't be done without going through a change of registrant process on either Web Drive or Freeparking. Freeparking handled this digitally when we did this (a long, multi-day, multi-form confirmation process), where as Web Drive require that signed form. Luckily they just did it en-masse for us with a rational discussion over the phone. Our situation is a bit different however. They knew we are the two entities are the same people. Not sure about other registrars. But I think it is usually the same. I think they have their own systems to cover their asses however they see fit. Personally, it makes sense to me. Bit tricky when you are relying on a possibly disgruntled 3rd party to sign off on it. However, it's not all finished yet, as Webdrive requires signed paperwork (https://cp.secureserver.co.nz/inc/Change%20of%20Name%20Holder.pdf) to confirm the transfer of ownership. Currently, the registrant contact is still the old developer, but the client's email and phone number are on the whois record. In other words, the client still doesn't legally own the domain So the current status is we are waiting for old developer to send back the signed change of ownership form (requested a couple of weeks back). One question - is this paperwork required with every registrar or is this just a Webdrive thing? I have used Webdrive for all my .nz domain needs for several years now and haven't had any reason to go elsewhere, I wouldn't know if this was normal or not. If we could get around having to chase this guy for a piece of paper by transferring to another registrar that might be the way to go.
