I was going to reply to this last night but got side tracked. But now
I can reply to two questions at the same time.

I have just last week secured a role with a website of note. This
opportunity came purely from a former colleague (a designer) who has
worked for this company for several years. I really don't think
anything can beat networking. If it's worth anything, I wasn't
actively looking for work. But where I live in relation to work was
becoming a hinderance after the company relocated. So I was on the
fence so-to-speak. The only roles I even applied for were this
successful one, and one from this list which I probably left too late
as I didn't hear back. What I am saying, is that networking and groups
like this - environments that "push" offers to the talent pool, are
the best (in my case only) way of getting to the people who are
thinking about, but not acting on a job hunt. I will definately use
these methods first and foremost when hunting for other developers.

I'll also say I find myself agreeing with Paul's comment on senior
level developers. I only say this because my new employer seemed to
have been looking for a month or so. I was asked to interview for the
above role without sighting my resume. The interview happened on a
Friday afternoon (I sent my resume in advance). An offer was made the
following Monday morning. None of my referees were contacted.

Obviously, I may owe someone a beer. And a former colleague on the
inside is about as good a reference as you can get. However the rapid
nature of the process makes me feel that it may be currently quite
difficult to find experienced developers. For context, I have 8 years
exp + ZCE.

But there may be other factors at play in my story. I'm a lovable sort
of chap.
