+1, I'm in favour of this proposal.

However, I don't see a strong reason to change the main branch.

I'm aware of a few 3rd party build jobs that currently depend on SVN and
will need some update with this switch to GitHub. Can we agree on a schedule
when the migration is done? This would give me and probably others a bit of
time to prepare those changes and prevent interruptions in external build
processes.
