I agree, Paul, that the waving on of cars should only done if it is safe.
This is a blanket statement which could be said about every human activity -
only do what is safe. One alternative is to ignore the motorist, other than
moving over to the right as much as possible, safely. Something which is
not an alternative is to stop and get off the road, unless the circumstances
are extraordinary. We all have to share the road. Besides, stopping and
starting up again puts cyclists at a great danger as well. It is best if we
try to accommodate each other safely and with consideration of all the
dangers involved.

Hate to think I may be opening a 'can of worms' here, but although I
agree with the PR effort I really don't agree with the practice of waving
cars
on.I am not thinking so much of straight open roads here, but I have seen
too manycyclists wave on a vehicle on hilly or curved roads where the
cyclist may
thinkit's all fine and dandy, but the vehicle driver still hasn't a clear
view
of what's ahead. In doing so, I always think the cyclist is taking on a
driver's responsibility to safely operate their vehicle, and shudder to
think of
what might happen should a fast moving vehicle suddenly appear in the
opposite
direction and the bike passing vehicle driver has assumed (erroneously)
that it's o.k. to proceed. Better to get off to the side in single file or
stop
altogether if the group is small/occupying too much road.
