I've been quite lucky then- I bought my polymers because I'm opposed to
using animal skins in footwear when alternatives are available, and I've
found them to be much more weather resistant than the leather ones I was
using earlier. I bike about 5000 km annually, and still often stay in my
shimanos when at work. I usually insert some magnet-imbedded insoles, and
have found them to help sustain my footsensitivity.

That's what I first bought 11 years ago. I found them hard to get into, and
once I slipped and crashed on the pavement on starting out. I was so much
is a rush and so aggravated with them that I kept on going, arriving at work
to be told by my aghast colleagues that my head was all bloodied and that I
had to report to the doctor lest I had a concussion! I'd just cycled for
almost an hour with no discomfort, so I ignored that, instead nursing my
aggravation against that cleat system!
I also didn't like the protruding plastic on the bottom of my shoes, and
wore a couple them out before getting the shimanos. I think I burned the
shoes to my immense satisfaction, after complaining to the shops about them
to whoever would listen.
My knees are still good, and for those of you familiar with the Gatineau
paths I'll see you at the Champlain lookout a few times this year. Living
in Montreal in my 20s I thrived on biking down Cote-des-Neiges at 62 kmph
dodging potholes trucks and taxis without a helmet, often in the rain (and
once in heavy hail). I've been stopped a few times for citations in more
reckless days, but not any more. But spending $175 on good brakes can be
well worth it, and having good treads while cornering at 50 kmph can be a
lifesaver. I've only have one collision with a speeding car which caused us
both equal damage, from which we called it a no-fault draw after a testy
exchange, and I think I've toned down my recklessness since then, 8 years
ago. I see a lot of seniors biking hard with serious equipment, and I sure
want to join them in another generation!
I've overheard too many late teens pissed off with having to use a bicycle
now that they have their licences- now I'll remind them not to complain
about high gas prices unless they certifiably lame!
I cycle to work daily, and have a problem with teenage skateboardists using
the end of my path without looking for those passing through. I've twice
hit either a rider or a board, recently damaging my rear wheel, and all they
can say is "sorry, man...". Obviously yelling won't help, so I'm looking
for either a sort of stun gun or a siren to get them out of the way- but I
certainly don't want to bother any innocents nearby.
Grant (pissed off about another flat- which looks caused by a knife slash)
