Telling me that someone can legislate the "group" back into group ride is a joke. You might as well hold politicians to their campaign promises.
It is common knowledge that a good group takes time to become one. Like
a good team in any sport. Group riding is when cycling becomes a
team sport. An interesting element in competition is when you meet the
border between team sport and individual.
It crosses the border many times as a group nears the finish or is
about to get caught.
Skilled riders can put a group together in a few minutes where a group
of novices are less likely to. Group riding is actually a skill that few
riders poccess.
Why do you think they say Bob Simpson or Les Humphries are great to
ride with?
Because they are skilled, experienced riders who also happen to be thinking of the group and not just themselves ( that is a bonus, not all skilled riders do). They have learned this, and share an attitude and that can not be legislated at a club meeting.
That is why the few good group rides are really great and why a great one is a special day to remember.
Getting dropped can be part of the experience, though not always good.
The lessons learned when getting dropped are the very ones that keep
you in the group the next time. Learning not to give up the wheel
in front of you or learning how quickly a gap opens up are critical
the process.
I love a good group ride and believe there could be more.
But Manny better be riding at the front of every group if he
thinks rules speak louder than a cross wind or even the slightest hill.
If you figured out that Group"A" starts too fast, you should have figured out to start with Group "B" the next time or to be warmed up. You can always lead a group and see what is involved.
Life is a group ride.
No one said it was as each of us wants it every week

That is my nickles worth.

I agree with Mannys comment of putting the group back into group rides.
Frommy experience over the past year, "group" tends to be dropped from "group
rides". Ive had far too many Sunday Rides quickly turn into solo rides, often on that
first climb on Riverside Dr. On the occasion they do wait, but only then to proceed
above what should be the speed limit for the group. That's my $0.02.
